Volunteering

Hello and welcome to WDP's Volunteering Programme!

Are you interested in working as a volunteer within treatment services?

WDP is widely recognised as a leading provider of substance misuse treatment. We can draw on a long, well-established record of working with volunteers.

Please be aware that we have very few volunteer vacancies for the immediate period. You are welcome to send in an application form (see below) - we do review all applications when new vacancies arise. We do respond to all applicants – but not until we have carried out a review of recent applications. This happens every 6 – 8 weeks.

We have a large number of volunteers on placement with us at any one time; placements offer a great opportunity to gain experience in the drug and alcohol field, and more broadly, to gain experience working in a charity.

For any enquiries into volunteering opportunities with WDP, please email the Volunteer Team or call 020 7421 3195.

The menu on the list to the left separates volunteering into 3 categories:

Volunteer organisational Support includes: administration; facilities management; IT and finance roles. Many of these positions are in our Central Office in Holborn, others are in our Projects that are based across London and surrounding counties.

In addition this category includes research volunteers - people who have some academic support or training in doing social research.

Volunteer Drug Work involves placements in one of our projects working with clients. The nature of the work varies depending on your experience and the needs of the project. Generally we are looking for a minimum of 6 months commitment, for 2 or 3 days a week for these posts. In most instances we would expect that someone completes our ‘ Induction Drug Worker Training’* course (see below) before becoming a drug work volunteer.

Counselling and Psychotherapy Trainees: We currently have a small number of places for people who are on Counselling/Psychotherapy course accredited by the BACP/UKCP/BABCP/BPS. Trainees need to be in their second year of professional training, at the point where they are being supported by the training organisation in seeing clients. Unfortunately we do not presently have the resources to provide in-house supervision, therefore this is something you will have to source yourself, in line with BACP guidelines. Trainees will have the option of attending some in-house training sessions, some of which will be mandatory within 6 months of taking up the placement.

Induction Training for Drug Work Volunteers:
Completion of this course is a pre-requisite for most people wanting to be drug work volunteer. Someone may not need to attend the whole course if they have sufficient experience/training in a related area. This is currently an 8 day course, taking place over two months. The dates of the next course have not been finalised, but it will take place in the autumn. Click here to access a detailed course outline, which can be found on the bottom half of the page.

NB: WDP welcome applications from ex-service users for this programme though we ask that you have been abstinent from substances for at least one year.
